Vernon Bailey Wolford, age 72, passed away after a courageous battle with ALS on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at his home on Grassy Creek surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 6, 1954 to the late Vernon Samuel Wolford and Betty Schrader Wolford.
He grew up on Jumbo and later Big Run in Diana, WV. He attended Diana Elementary, where he was a member of the excellent Diana Demons Softball teams in the ‘60s. He graduated in the last graduating class of Webster Springs High School in 1974. In his senior shop class, he helped build the “new” high school bleachers at WCHS, and then helped tear those down and build the next set in 2007.
Vernon was married to the late Cheri Clevenger Wolford in 1985 after they met at a revival at New Hope Church in Diana. They were married and lived in the house he built for 34 years. Together they had two children and 3 grandchildren. After Cheri’s passing in 2019, Vernon found companionship and married Julie Robinson after meeting again at their high school reunion.
He was a 15 year veteran of the United States Army National Guard. After retiring from the Army, he worked at United Bank, was a general contractor, retired from Webster County Schools as classroom aide, maintenance, and bus driver, and did many odd jobs around the county. He spent his young adulthood racing motorcross, and was a dedicated rider of his Harley Davidson with his riding crew who called him “V-Dub”. He was a talented artist with his artwork printed on the Webster Springs Fenton Bells and other renderings framed within Webster Springs United Bank. He had a skill for wood working and made and sold dulcimers, turkey calls, bass guitars, tools, and toys. He loved fly fishing and hunting, especially deer season at Hughes Camp (Camp Slickhead) with the guys. He enjoyed attending his niece and nephews high school basketball games.
He was a man of many talents, but his most important testimony was being saved and accepting Jesus as his Savior. His faith has never wavered. If a church door was open, he was walking in. He was a member of Cherry Falls Chapel and leaves behind his cherished church brothers and sisters.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Alice Wolford and mother-in-law Ronelda Clevenger.
Left to cherish his legacy include his wife, Julie, his children Kayla (Kevin) Schrader, and Kendall (Katlynn) Wolford, grandchildren Henley, Reagan, and Leightyn; step-son Jace Robinson; sister Linda Wolford (Lonnie Casto) and brother Joe Wolford; half-sisters Wanda, Louise, and Glenna; father-in-law Oral Clevenger, brothers-in-law Aaron (Judy), Edward, and Darrin (Chrissy) Clevenger; special aunt, Genelda Jones (his birthday buddy); nephews Matthew Kuhar, Bryson, Seth, Nathan, Isaiah, and Riley Clevenger, and nieces Bethany Dean and Harley Clevenger, and many more great nieces, nephews, and cousins.
His family would like to thank Adoration Hospice for their wonderful care and assistance, especially Ed, Brooke, Stephanie, Cristy, Jack, and Tracy.
He was a jokester, a family man, a Godly man, and willing to help build or fix something at the drop of a hat. He enters heaven to reunite with Cheri Lynn, and other family members, with a smile on his face. He would want us to think of him and smile, and say, “grits!”

Doris “Jean” White (Brady), was born on Saturday, November 4th, 1944, in a cabin on Kingfisher Road in Webster County, West Virginia, and passed from this life into the glories of heaven on Sunday, October 11th, 2026, at NHC in McMinnville, Tennessee following a brief illness and hospital stay. She was 81 years young.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Larry James White Sr. of Bone Cave, Tennessee, her son, Larry James White Jr. (Jim) of Vermilion, Ohio, her father Sherman Everett Brady, mother Retha Belle Brady, sister Wilma Gay Waybright, brother John Everett Brady, brother Harold Edward Brady, sister Sylvia Belle Woods, sister Wavelene Ann Aldrich “Ann”, and sister Goldie May Hartle. Jean was the last of her generation in the family and was able to be with every one of her family that preceded her in death during their transition.
Jean comes from a large family and is survived by her oldest son Gene McNabb oof Lagrange, Indiana and his children, Tanya, John, Tabitha, and Justin; her daughter Melissa Kathryn White “Kathy” of Spencer, Tennessee and her children Cassidy and Tobbie Jr. “T.J.” (Jackie); her son Dr. John Robert White (Anya) of Cleveland, Tennessee and their children, Robert and Anastasia; her son Martin Mason White “Marty” (Melissa) of Bone Cave, Tennessee and their children Brittany (Matt), Matthew, and Elizabeth, and Jean’s great grandchildren Emma and Maggie (children of Brittany and Matt)
Jean graduated from Webster County High School in 1962 and moved to Roswell, New Mexico, Riudoso, New Mexico, and El Paso, Texas before moving to Lorain, Ohio to babysit for her brother John. She then moved to Painesville, Ohio and was working as a chemist at a rubber plant when she met her future husband, Larry, who was also employed at the same facility. The married and moved in with her brother Harold and his wife, Louise, until their first home was approved a few months later in Vermilion, Ohio.
Jean worked at a waitress, and later as a paper deliverer for the Lorain Morning Journal and was very involved in her church holding many positions through the years, such as Sunday School Teacher, Missionary Leader, Youth Leader, Music Minister, Clerk, Secretary, and Treasurer, as well as was the long-time church piano player. She taught herself how to play piano and guitar so the church could have music.
When Larry and Jean retired in 1997, they moved to Bone Cave, Tennessee and became active members in the community. Jean volunteered to work the polls during voting in Van Buren County, sat on the board for the Bone Cave Community Center, and was the photographer for the Cedar Grove Fire Department. She was also the piano player, Sunday School Teacher and Treasurer for the Spencer Church of God of Prophecy for many years, before transitioning to Clark’s Chapel Church of God, where she continued to play piano up until just a few weeks before her passing.
Jean also was an animal lover having three cats, Nakita, Ivan, and Luna.
Though she will be missed, it is her desire to see all of her loved ones in heaven one day. We will celebrate her life on October 18th at Layne Funeral home in Spencer, Tennessee. Visitation will start at 11:00 a.m. and her celebration of life will begin at 2:00 p.m. with Bishop Jeff Worrix officiating.
Jean will be laid to rest next to Larry at the Laurel Creek Cemetery in Bone Cave, Tennessee.
Stella Lynn Hinkle Miles, 81 of Webster Springs, passed away on Sunday, October 4, 2026 at her home. She was born September 19, 1945 in Glen, WV to the late Lawrence David and Ruby Marie Durham Hinkle.Lynn was a 1964 graduate of Clay County High School and went on to attend Glenville State College. She was a homemaker and then later in life became Manager at Elk River Terrace Apartments for 20 years.Lynn was saved on June 10, 1960 and became a member of First Baptist Church of Webster Springs in 1971. She loved singing and always felt honored to be called to the funeral home to sing Beulah Land for her friends and neighbors. David Luther Martin, Sr., 77, of Camden-on-Gauley, West Virginia, passed away on October 6, 2026, on the family farm where he was born nearly 78 years earlier. His life began and ended on the farm that was always such an important part of his life.David was born October 21, 1948, to Tom and Helen Heilman Martin. He grew up on the family farm with his older sister, Janice Martin Poling. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, and his father and mother in-law, Hank and Deloris Ferrell Blankenship.David attended West Virginia Institute of Technology, where he earned his degree in Civil Engineering. It was also at WVIT that he met his college sweetheart, Wanda Blankenship. Years later, David returned to WVIT to earn a degree in Mining Engineering, allowing him to continue his career while remaining at home with his family. David and Wanda were married for 56 years and built a wonderful life and family together.David had a long career as an engineer and was both a Professional Engineer and Professional Land Surveyor. He began his career with the West Virginia State Road, later worked for Region 4 Planning and Development Council, and worked for several miningcompanies throughout his career. He eventually returned to work for the State of West Virginia, where he finished his career leading the Special Reclamation program for mines.David and Wanda had three children whom he adored. All three of his children followed in his footsteps by attending WVIT and becoming engineers, something that made David very proud.David loved his six grandchildren beyond measure. Through the years, he was lovingly known to them as Papaw Dave, Papa Dave, and Grandpa. He loved being part of their lives and rarely missed an opportunity to show up for them. Whether it was a sportingevent, play, concert, awards ceremony, or another special occasion, they could count on him being there. Watching them grow and celebrating their accomplishments brought him great joy.David was incredibly bright and could fix just about anything. He could usually figure out what was wrong and how to make it work again. He was always willing to share what he knew and was just as willing to lend a hand. Family, friends, and peoplethroughout the community knew they could count on him when they needed help.David loved working on the family farm. He was especially known for his honey and potatoes, which became favorites of people near and far. People looked forward to getting them each year, and David took great pride in producing both.David was an avid outdoorsman who especially loved boating, camping, hunting, fishing, and backpacking. He shared his love of the outdoors with anyone who was willing to go. Over the years, he took his son, sons-in-law, grandchildren, and many others along with him. Those trips created memories and stories that will be treasured for years to come.David was a member of Little Union Baptist Church in Calvin, West Virginia. He also served his community for many years as Chairman of the Camden-on-Gauley Medical Center.David will be remembered for his intelligence, his determination, his generosity, and his willingness to help anyone who needed him. He was a devoted husband, a loving Dad, Papaw, Papa and Grandpa, an engineer, a farmer, an outdoorsman, and a good friend and neighbor.To his family, he was the person they could always call. When something broke, Dad knew how to fix it. When there was a problem, he could usually figure it out. When someone needed help, he showed up. Even after his children were grown and hadfamilies of their own, he never stopped being their Dad and taking care of them.David is survived by his wife of 56 years, Wanda Blankenship Martin; his children, Lori (Paul) Shaffer, Lesley (Shane) Ridenour, and David Jr. “DJ” (Megan) Martin; his grandchildren, Keegan and Kaden Shaffer, Nathanael (fiancée, Sarah) and Nicolas Ridenour, and Margaux and Madelyn Martin; his sisters-in-law, Millie Gonzalez and Sherry (Mike) Williams; his brother-in-law, Paul Blankenship; and many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.David’s family would like to express their special gratitude to his brother-in-law, Paul Blankenship, whose love, support, and help during David’s final months were invaluable to David, Wanda, and the entire family. Linda June Wayne, passed away on September 22, 2026, at the age of 83. Born on December 27, 1942, in Cowen, she was a woman of deep faith, quiet devotion, and abiding love for her family.
A proud graduate of the Cowen High School Class of 1961, Linda carried throughout her life a steady sense of purpose and care for others. She worked for several years as an aide at Glade Elementary School, a role that reflected her patient spirit and her gift for service. She was a Christian by faith and found comfort and strength in reading her Bible. Her days were often brightened by the simple pleasures she cherished most: gardening, camping, reading, working puzzles, and tending to her flower gardens.
Linda’s life was rooted in family, and her memory will be treasured by those who knew her love firsthand. She is survived by her daughter, Donna Nulter of Cowen; her sister, Mary Jane Ratsloff of Kansas; her grandchildren, Wesley Wayne, Michael Johnson, Jr., Whitney Wayne, Sasha Hayes, Brandon Nulter, and Alex Nulter; and her great-grandchildren, Michael and Amber Spence, Gracie Hayes, Everly McPherson, Owen, Weston, and Addie Wayne, Zachery, Zoey Madison, and Levi Nulter, Jakob and Ivan Nulter, and Trinity Litton. In the generations that follow her, her kindness, her strength, and the warmth of her presence will continue to be felt.
She was preceded in death by her father, John Lemley; her mother, Leafy McCavoy; her husband, David Wayne, Sr.; her son, David Wayne, Jr.; her sister, Shirley Turner; her brother, Johnny Lemley; her grandson, Tony Dodrill; and her son-in-law, Douglas Nulter. Their memories remained part of her life’s story and now are joined with hers in rest.

Patricia Carolyn Miller, born Patricia Carolyn Tyler, passed away on September 27, 2026, after an extended illness. She was born on February 7, 1936, in Arcola, and throughout her life remained deeply connected to the people and places of Webster County.
A 1955 graduate of Cowen High School, Patricia devoted much of her life to serving her community. She worked for the Webster County Board of Education as a secretary, custodian and a teacher’s aide for 45 years. Even after retirement, her care for children and her school community continued, and she returned to Glade Elementary to volunteer in the office and read with students. Her steady presence and willingness to help made a lasting difference to many.=
Patricia’s life was marked by service, energy, and love for her hometown. She was a 4-H leader for the Rise and Shine club for many years. Patricia was a devoted Christian being active in Cornerstone Covenant Church. You could often find her singing hymns in church, at revivals or with her family. She helped organize and form the Cowen Railroad Festival and served as the pageant director for many years. She also helped to bring the ambulance service into Cowen and helped start the Cowen newspaper. She loved to talk about Cowen and Webster County and was always ready to promote the beauty of the area and the goodness of its people.
She found joy in caring for others in both large and small ways. She loved to cook, bake, make crafts, tend flowers, raise funds for St. Jude’s, and help with the bikeathon. She was truly a jack of all trades, and many will lovingly remember that no one could resist her chicken and biscuits, granny’s jelly, pumpkin rolls and cornflake holly wreaths. These gifts, shared so freely, became part of the comfort and happiness she brought to family, friends, and neighbors alike.
Patricia was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, E.G. Jack Miller, son’s Tommy Miller and Mark Miller. She was also proceeded in death by her parents Delbert and Audrey Tyler and siblings, Kenneth Tyler, Emaleen Starcher, Wanda Gadd and Keith Tyler.
She is survived by her daughter Carolyn Mullens and Carolyn’s husband, Roger, of Cowen; her daughter Robin Ralieghand Robin’s husband, Joe, of Morgantown; and her son Johnny Miller and Johnny’s wife, Sandy, of Cowen. She is also survived by her siblings, Barbara Robinson, Deb Tyler, Jerry Tyler and David Tyler. Her memory will also be cherished by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, as well as by several nieces and nephews, extended family members, and many friends whose lives were brightened by her warmth, generosity, and deep love for her community.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Covenant Church, 6075 Webster Road, Cowen, West Virginia 26206. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Cornerstone Covenant Church, with Rev. Phillip Hickman officiating. Burial will follow at the Dunlap/Miller Cemetery on Williams River Road in Cowen.
Carol Ann Stalnaker, born August 26, 1947 peacefully passed away in North Carolina after an illness on September 28, 2026.
Carol was always referred to as the sweetest lady (and that she was). Carol put all of her love and hard work into raising her family and making sure they knew the love was there. Her laugh was like no other; it made others laugh whether it was funny or not.
She was a 1965 graduate of Cowen High School. She married her high school sweetheart and would have celebrated 60 years. She enjoyed working in her flower gardens and was a seamstress in her younger years. She also loved taking senior cruises with the girls.
She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth “Libby” (husband Tim) Lackey of Monroe, NC and Annette Buzzard of Surfside Beach, SC. Carol had one grandchild David Cobb; two great-grandchildren: Carter Cobb and Raelyn Meadows; and many extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Gilbert and Beulah Miller Selman; husband Michael Stalnaker; sister Suzie Moore; and brother Billy Selman. Their memories remained a part of her life and they are remembered alongside them with love.
Services to celebrate Carol’s life will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2026 at 1:00 PM at Adams-Reed Funeral Home, Cowen with Pastor Doug Martin officiating. Interment will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Cowen.

Vanita Gaye Hinkle, 95, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on March 21, 1931, in Cowen, and lived a long life marked by devotion to her family and the many generations who were blessed to know her.She will be remembered with love by her family, whose lives stand as part of her enduring legacy. Gaye is survived by her sons, Bern (Judy) Smith, Terry (Linda) Smith, and Rusty Jarvis, and by her daughter, Sherry Porsch. She also leaves behind her 9 grandchildren, as well as her 12 great-grandchildren. The family would like to send a special thank you to Angie Hoover for all her help and care of our mother during this difficult time. Billy Lee Selman Sr., born April 21, 1946, passed away at his residence on September 6, 2026.Billy lived a life marked by hard work, loyalty, and the simple pleasures he loved most. A 1964 graduate of Cowen High School, he went on to build a long career as a coal miner, working for 35 years with Island Creek Coal Company. He was also a proud member of the United Mine Workers Association, a reflection of both his dedication to his work and the strength of character he carried throughout his life.Outside of work, Billy found joy in the things that kept his hands busy and his heart full. He enjoyed working on cars, hunting, fishing, remodeling his house, and going to camp. He especially loved his two GTO vehicles, taking pride in it as he did in the many parts of life that mattered to him. These interests were more than pastimes; they were part of the way he connected with the world and with those around him.Billy will be remembered with love by his family. He is survived by his sons, Randy Selman of Orange County, Virginia, and Randy’s wife, Stacey Selman and Billy Lee Selman, Jr. of Fredericksburg, Virginia and Billy’s wife Sam. and by his sister, Carol Stalnaker of Cowen. Billy had six grandchildren, Andrew Selman, Colin Selman, Travis Selman, Connor Selman, Coltin Selman and Kayla Bowers and seven great grandchildren, Aubree Selman, Willow Selman, Kasen Bowers, Kaine Bowers, Brantley Tolley, Rylee Violette, and Ivy Williams.
