By Emma Mustoe The Webster County Highlander Football team was back on the road this past Friday, Oct 2nd. They traveled to Wilson-Eismon Field in Elizabeth, WV, to take on the Wirt County Tigers. In four historical matchups between the Highlanders and the Tigers, the Tigers walked away with the victory every time. On Friday, that changed. The Highlanders came out strong in the first quarter, capping their first scoring drive with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Silas Mustoe to Hunter Skidmore. Spencer Baird’s extra point was good, bringing the score to 7-0 (Webster). Wirt County completed a touchdown pass and the extra point at the end of the 1st quarter, tying it 7-7. Then, in the 2nd quarter, Wirt scored again on a touchdown run. The extra point attempt was fumbled. This brought the score to 7-13 (Wirt). In the 3rd quarter, the Highlanders made a 28-yard touchdown run from Silas Mustoe. Spencer Baird’s extra point was good, and brought the score to 14-13 (Webster). Late in the 3rd quarter, Ryder Wright had a whopping 96-yard touchdown run. The 2-point conversion failed, bringing the score up to 20-13 (Webster). Webster’s defense tightened up in the 4th quarter to keep Wirt County from scoring. The Highlanders prevailed, bringing home the victory over Wirt County with a final score of 20-13. The team’s record is now 4-2. Webster County will be back on the road on Friday, October 16th, in Glenville to take on the Gilmer County Titans.
